This talk by Eoin McGreal will cover how and why bogs were formed, their distribution in Mayo and their importance for nature conservation, climate and water regulation, their cultural and economic importance over the centuries and how they can best be protected and restored.

Eoin McGreal is District Conservation Officer and Conservation Ranger in Co Mayo.  He currently works with Wild Atlantic Nature LIFE IP, an EU-funded project, co-ordinated through the National Parks & Wildlife Service.  It engages with farmers and local communities to add value to the wide range of services provided from the designated Special Area of Conservation (SAC) network of blanket bogs and associated areas largely in Donegal, Mayo and Galway.
